New Seat for the Himalayan 450

New Seat for the Himalayan 450

After putting 2000 miles on the stock seat, my butt decided that there needed to be a change. I will admit, the stock seat that comes on the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 is functional but for me, not comfortable at all. I think that the sharp angles just happened to hit my butt in just the worst spot. After about 20-30 minutes, it began to hurt.

I know that a new seat needs to be broken in. I tried but the seat just was not a good fit for me. So back to the forums and the internet to see what options were available. After much consideration, I opted to get a Seat Concepts Comfort seat.

This is only a seat cover and foam kit. You will need to re-use the original base plate. I have never covered a seat. I decided to find a person that does motorcycle seats for a living and have them swap it out. I wanted it to be done right.

Overall the cost of the seat is not that bad (about $200). If this seat makes riding comfortable, it is well worth it. I found a local guy to do the recovering for an very reasonable price. Luckily I was going out of town for the weekend and would be passing right by his house. On Friday afternoon, I dropped it off and he was able to have it complete when I passed through again on Sunday. I was extremely grateful.

So now the true test. Is the seat comfortable? After I put the seat on, I decided to give a short ride...about 45 minutes. No issues! That is a good sign. The true test would be to ride it for hours at a time. So the next weekend, I did two days of multi hour riding. The first day was 4.5 hours. I did take a break for gas but I was able to sit in the seat for 2+ hours without that annoying pain. Sure I had the typical "I want to get out of this seat" syndrome but the sharp pains were gone. Just for kicks, I decided the next day to do the same thing. Multiple hours in the seat. Again, no pain.

So my assessment of this new seat is that it definitely made a difference. It is comfortable for long periods of sitting without the sharp pain in my rear. Even with my other bike where the seat is extremely comfortable, I would not want to do 1000 miles without a break but overall this is a much needed improvement and well worth the $$ I spent to make it happen. Now doing day rides is enjoyable and I can sit for 2 hours without pain.
